Crispy Homemade Granola (Oven Method) – Easy, Healthy & Budget-Friendly

The first time I tasted granola, it felt a bit foreign — like one of those things you only see in supermarkets in big cities. But at the same time, it tasted really good, and I enjoyed it.

Later on, I became more curious about it and realized something interesting: even though granola isn’t very common in many Nigerian homes, it is actually a healthy, nutrient-dense snack.

The best part? The ingredients are not difficult to find, and you can easily make it at home and adjust everything to your taste. Since then, I’ve been making my own homemade granola — and honestly, it comes out very crispy, crunchy, and satisfying.

Why You’ll Love This Homemade Granola

-Made with simple, easy-to-find ingredients

– Naturally crunchy and filling

– You can customize it however you like

– Perfect as a snack or breakfast

– Much cheaper than store-bought granola

Ingredients

Here’s what I used:

3 cups rolled oats

2 tablespoons sesame seeds

3 tablespoons sunflower seeds

3 tablespoon flaxseed

1 tablespoon chia seeds

½ cup dry raisins

¼ cup almonds (roughly chopped)

¼ cup groundnuts (peanuts)

4 tablespoons coconut oil

1 cup sugar syrup (or date syrup for a healthier option)

3 tablespoons chocolate chips

You can adjust the quantities based on what you have at home.

What Type of Oats Works Best? (Nigerian Guide)

In Nigeria, especially in Lagos, you’ll usually find two types of oats:

  • More crushed oats (quick oats) – softer and smaller
  • Whole-looking oats (rolled oats)-larger flakes and more textured

For granola, rolled oats work best because they give a better crunch and texture. However, if all you have is quick oats, you can still use them — your granola will just be less chunky and slightly softer.

How to Make Crispy Granola (Oven Method)

1. Preheat your oven

If your oven doesn’t show temperature (like my old one), just set it to medium heat.

2. Mix the dry ingredients

In a large bowl, combine oats, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, flaxseed, chia seeds, almonds, dry raisins, chocolate chips and groundnuts.

3. Add the wet ingredients

Pour in the coconut oil and sugar syrup (or date syrup), then mix everything well until the oats are evenly coated.

4. Spread on a baking tray

Line the tray with baking paper and pour the mixture onto a tray and spread it out thinly. This helps it get crispy.

5. Press for clusters (optional but recommended)

Before baking, gently press the mixture firmly into the tray. This helps create those crunchy granola chunks instead of loose oats.

6. Bake without stirring

Place the tray in the oven and bake for about 1 hour. Do not stir while baking, this helps the granola hold together and form clusters.

7. Let it cool completely before breaking

Once out of the oven, allow it to cool fully before breaking into chunks. This is when it becomes extra crispy.

How to Eat Granola

You can enjoy your homemade granola in different ways:

– As a quick snack (just eat it as it is)

– With Greek yogurt

– With milk like cereal

– As a topping for smoothies or fruit

Storage Tips

-Store in an airtight container

-Keep in a cool, dry place

– It can last up to 2–3 weeks if properly stored.

My Personal Tips for Crunchy Granola Clusters

  • I lined my tray with baking paper to prevent sticking and make removal easy
  • Make sure you use enough wet ingredients (oil + syrup). The first time I made granola, it didn’t come out very crunchy because I didn’t add enough syrup. Once I adjusted it, the texture improved a lot.
  • I added everything at once — including raisins and chocolate chipsI did not stir while baking, which helped the granola form clusters
  • I pressed the mixture firmly into the tray before baking
  • The longer it baked, the crispier it became

If you prefer loose granola, you can stir occasionally. But if you love crunchy clusters like I do, don’t stir it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I skip some of the seeds?

Yes! You can use only what you have. Granola is very flexible.

Can I use honey instead of sugar syrup?

Absolutely. Honey works well and adds a nice flavor.

Why is my granola not crunchy?

It may need more baking time or more cooling time. Granola crisps up as it cools.

Final Thoughts

Making granola at home made me realize that something that once felt “foreign” is actually very simple and accessible. With just a few ingredients, you can create a healthy snack that suits your taste and your budget.

Once you try it, you might not go back to store-bought granola again.
